Our Nature Journals Week 6

Blustery and cold, this week has been again, either heavy rainfall or beautiful frosts. The feeders in the garden are very busy, hence Rosie’s sketch this week. The woods are still pretty bare, which gives us the joy of seeing squirrels scampering around, hunting for food.

In my journal I chose to capture the flowering Hyacinth from my dining room table, and the full Wolf Moon.

Our Nature Journals Week 5

Heaps of rain, sun-shiny days, frosts, high winds, we have had all sorts of weather this week.

We took part in the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch on Monday, so Rose chose to sketch some of the birds that came to our feeders in her journal this week.

In the garden, the Snowdrops are in full bloom, and the other bulbs are poking through the ground. I have a potted Hyacinth in the house which I sketched this week. I also sketched what I think was a garden spider I saw making a web in one of our Holly bushes, very early one morning. It was before dawn, and the spider was a tiny wee thing, so I couldn’t make out any markings. I used a photograph to sketch this monster in my Calendar of Firsts!

Our Nature Journals Week 4

Icy cold, with either chilly days or freezing rain, sums up our weather this week.

We have so many birds at the feeders; Coal tits, Great tits, Blue tits, Sparrows, Robins, pigeons, and of course Blackbirds by the heap, and I chose a handsome fellow to sketch in my Calendar of Firsts this week.

Rose sketched a twig from the budding Magnolia tree, I sketched a branch from one of our Raspberry canes.

The Snowdrops are coming along nicely…spring is on the way!

Our Phenology Wheels

IMG_0595.jpg

A few years ago, we kept phenology wheels that combined the natural world with the liturgical seasons and festivals. Rose and I have decided to each keep one again for this year.
The larger section for each month is where we will record the natural world, the smaller section is for the festivals; January’s being Epiphany. (We both chose Epiphany to record.)
There really are so many different ways to keep a nature journal!

Our Nature Journals Week 3

It has been so chilly here this week. Brrr! (Though my readers from places covered in snow will laugh at my definition of chilly!)

Rose had a couple of caterpillars that she put in an insect case in late autumn, they have both now hatched; here is one of them that she sketched in her nature journal.

Everything here feels rather dreary; mud, mud, and more mud. We have had some glorious colours in the sky, however, which brighten things up no end.

I sketched this week a wee twig from one of our Magnolia trees, and a tiny snowdrop.

The snowdrops are peeping though the ground, and a couple have begun to flower. Candlemas Bells, as they are known always give me such joy. A true sign that spring is on its way.

Our Nature Journals This Week

We have had such a chilly week here; icy rain, sleet, and finally SNOW! Sadly our snow did not last long, but it was terribly exciting all the same.

Rose decided to sketch a lovely cat that has been choosing to visit us since around Christmas time. I love how she captured his eyes, and his wee sticking out tongue.

I sketched the beautiful full ‘Moon after Yule’ that we had on Thursday. Is was so bright and glorious, hanging there in the night sky. I also sketched the tiny potted Daffs that are beginning to bloom on my dining room table. They are a lovely bright touch to my day, and a reminder that spring is coming. The snowdrops are pushing through in the garden, ad I am willing them on!

I am giving away a copy in the Charlotte Mason Nature Journaling group on Facebook, so hop on over & comment on the post to have a chance of winning; I shall be drawing the winner tomorrow.

Calendar of Firsts 2017

The New Year arrived before I was ready, but we had a beautiful, restful day, with the sliver of a crescent moon visible in the day-time sky, along with bright, beautiful Venus!

img_0467

The feeders in the garden have been busy; Blue tits, Great tits, Ruben the Robin, Sparrows, Blackbirds, and a friendly pigeon who does his best to feed there.

We have had some wonderful, freezing weather with bright blue skies, whilst today is extremely foggy. Rose is out at the stables, I hope she doesn’t lose her way i the fog when she rides out!

As you can see, I have begun my new Calendar of Firsts. I have yet to washi-tape the page edges though! Have you begun your journal yet?

Wishing you all a smashing, nature-filled year!

Calendar of Firsts Flip Through

IMG_0385.jpg

It seems ever such a long time ago since I began my Calendar of Firsts back in January. But the year has rolled on, and each week I have added my observations about the natural world around me.

This morning I sketched my last entry: Week 52: Hoarfrost on Holly, and a Moorhen.

I have created a flip-through video so you can see all the nature happenings that I have recorded this year, and I do hope that you will consider keeping your own Calendar of Firsts (whether illustrated or not) in 2017

Wishing you a happy and peaceful new year!

Calendar of Firsts ~ Week 51

IMG_0164.jpg

Week 51 The penultimate week of my Calendar of Firsts.

That same story as the last few weeks, weatherise. Lots of rain and some frosty mornings. Breathtaking sunsets and sunrises. The Monday morning sky was half deep, but bright blue, half a glorious lilac-purple tone. The waning gibbous moon sat like a plump, cut diamond on a velvet cushion. We have a few sprigs of Mistletoe hanging in the hall way, so before I hung it up, I painted it and Rose cut open a berry to investigate the sticky insides.

And this is Christmas week! Such joy!

Calendar of Firsts ~ Week 50

img_0095

Week 50! I am definitely on a countdown to the end of the year, and consequently, the end of my Calendar of Firsts.

Lots and lots of rain here again this week. And gorgeous sunsets and sunrises. I chose to paint the plump, ripe Ivy berries in the garden, and also the full ‘Moon before Yule’. It was quite a windy morning and the clouds were scudding along at quite a rate. We have also had some lovely Collar Doves visit the feeders this week, which was a joy.
