My Calendar of Firsts this week:

  • The glorious, full, bright moon on a crisp, (almost) clear night.
  • The Mallards were hungry this week, and were splashing around in the sunshine.
  • Budding daffodils at my monthly spinning guild meeting.

My ‘colours’ for the week, along the top left hand page, are a lovely bright yellow for the sunshine, along with the splashy blues of the sky.

As it is the end of the month, I thought I would update you on my ‘list’ pages.

Temperature

My chart is not reflecting the cold temps we have had this last few days. I need to make a regular time of day for temperature reading.

My flower list is picking up!

My bird List.

A lovely reader shared her smashing idea to use the traffic light system to denote ‘birds of concern’ from the RSPB

February was rain, rain, and more rain. We had some bright sunny days, so I had to represent those too, with a splash if bright yellow!

My Calendar of Firsts this week:

  • The first real cold snap of winter! We are greeted by chilly, frosty mornings.
  • Glorious sunshine
  • A black garden slug rescued from the pond by Rose.
  • Mating frogs in our pond.
  • Meeting Charlie the Grass snake at the Reptile workshop at our local Pets At Home

My ‘colours’ for the week, along the top left hand page are not showing up that well in the photograph. I used grey-blue and yellow of the skies.

My Calendar of Firsts this week:

  • Crocuses in the church garden
  • Glorious sunshine
  • Our first garden Wood mouse of the year. Rose found him under a tree, very still, so we wonder if our cat was responsible. She took care of the wee thing, named him Timmy, and put him out under the trees in the back garden, along with seed and hay, and kept an eye on him, until he was able to run off. We have a lively community of Wood mice in our garden!
  • Irises from my Valentine. He knows me so very well.

My ‘colours’ for the week, along the top left hand page, are the grey and yellow of the skies, plus the yellow and purple of the crocuses and irises.

My Calendar of Firsts this week:

  • Courting pigeons
  • Two patches of snowdrops in my garden (I had wondered where they were!)
  • The amazing nacreous clouds, caused by ice crystals refracting the sun’s rays to give the stunning rainbow effect.

My ‘colours’ for the week, along the top left hand page, are the pretty, soft, pastel colours of the nacreous clouds.

My Calendar of Firsts this week:

I missed our nature walks this week as I was very poorly, so my firsts are all from our garden.

My ‘colours’ for the week, along the top left hand page, are quite murky this week. Lots of rain and blustery weather.

As it is the end of the month, I thought I would update you on my ‘list’ pages.

Colours of the year

January turned out to be a much brighter month than I ever expected! Gorgeous rainbows that added a lovely glow to an otherwise dark and rainy month.

My Calendar of Firsts this week:

  • Tufted ducks on the pond
  • Geese and pigeons in the park
  • Playful sparrows
  • A beautiful, full moon.

My ‘colours’ for the week, along the top left hand page, are blue grey, but have quite a lot of sunny yellow in this entry. Hurrah!

I also included a small print out of a photo of Rose when she was a tiny dolly, that featured a Charlotte Mason quote I posted on the FaceBook group this week.

My Calendar of Firsts this week:

  • Our first garden Goldfinch
  • Magpies and crows in the park.
  • One of Rosie’s favourite pigeons, Swiff, that has been tied up (we found the remains of a string, tied around his foot.) and coloured by someone 🙁
  • The movement of wind across the grass
  • The New moon

I added a photo of Rose with the pigeons and a printout of a Charlotte Mason quote from my FaceBook page.

My ‘colours’ for the week, along the top left hand page, are splashy grey with a hint of blue! Hurray!

I have created a page especially for keeping track of all the calendar of firsts. You can find it in the tabs at the top of the screen. You can also look in the categories in the right hand side-bar. Hopefully this will make looking for posts much simpler.

The first week of a fresh new journal…how very intimidating!

1

We stayed up to see the New year in & were treated to the constellation of Orion; bright & shiny in a clear night sky.

On new years day we took a walk to the park; I got a lovely photo of the girls being silly together.

I added birds to my bird list in the back of my journal, plus a wee, lone daisy to my wildflower list.

The little painted band along the top of the left hand page is a watercolour representation of the colours of the week; this week being very wet, cold, and rainy. This will help me when I come to paint in the Colours of the Month.

How was your first week?

How are you getting on with your Calendar of Firsts?

I have begun mine and I am finding it to be a quick, and non-threatening form of nature journaling!

Inspired by Charlotte Mason, who mentions list keeping,  I thought I would share with you some of the list-type entries I plan to keep this year.

“The study of natural history and botany with bird lists and plant lists continues throughout school life, while other branches of science are taken term by term.”

Daily Temperature

I will be using the calendar section of my diary to record the daily temperature. As a fun twist, I am going to colour each date according to the temperature. You can see my colour key at the bottom of the calendar:

1

If you miss a day, here is a good site to check the temperature of your locality for the last two weeks.

Colours Of The Year

This idea comes from Clare Walker Leslie. It is in one of her books, but unfortunately I cannot remember which one. Please do post in the comments if you know. I have done this previously, and it really does help me to think about the colours in nature through the months of the year. Simple sketch out a circle and divide into twelve, each twelfth representing a month of the year. You then simply paint the current ‘month’ with the colours you see around you in the natural world. Fun!

2

Bird List

Simply a list of birds I have seen. I include the following information:

  • Common name
  • Latin Name
  • Location
  • Date

3

Flower List

As with the birds, a list of wildflowers I have seen. I include the same information as for the bird list.

4

That is all for now; I shall let you know if I decide to add further lists.
