Summer Solstice Week ~ Exploring Nature With Children

DSC02736

This week is Summer Solstice Week in Exploring Nature With Children.

We planned a lovely walk for the Solstice. And then it rained. And rained. And rained some more! As the rain lightened a little, Rose rescued two bees that were too tired out to fly.

She popped honey on her hand for them to eat, and soon they were right as rain! (Please excuse the pun!) And away they flew.

The sun finally came out and we enjoyed a glorious late afternoon and evening in the garden.

Rose sketched a raspberry leaf for her journal.

I sketched a Blackberry cutting.

What are you studying in nature this week?

Museum Week 2 ~ Exploring Nature With Children

Last week in Exploring Nature With Children was Museum Week. We had a very special trip planned for Rose: Shark diving!

1

It was a super-exciting day for her; one that has been anticipated for a while. I went behind the scenes with her whilst she received her training, then once she was underwater, I joined dad and sister in the underwater tunnel to watch her.

I have to confess it was so difficult to film in there that I didn’t get much. I shared a short video on my Instagram account (right hand sidebar) But I couldn’t manage to embed in this post!

Once her dive was over, we did the obligatory gift shop visit.

Then we spent time looking around the aquarium at the various exhibits.

11

We really must read Pagoo again!

I fell in love with this wee tortoise. He really was tiny! We spent ages watching him; he was right out of My Family and Other Animals, which we are enjoying tremendously.

We worked on journal entries at home, choosing to sketch something we had seen there & referencing photos to help us.

I chose jellyfish, a Tetra, and a beautiful, unidentified fish.

Museum Week ~ Exploring Nature With Children

This week is a special week in Exploring Nature With Children, it’s Museum Week! We have a very special trip planned for this week, but as we have had lots of Honey Bees visiting our garden, I thought we might as well make a start on next week’s lesson.

Along with the bees, Rose made good friends with ‘Fabulous Frog’!

f1

Isn’t he fabulous!

We have had some smashing weather this week, so the girls have been working on lessons outdoors. Bees aplenty!

We read quite a lot from Handbook Of Nature Study and we found an interesting video to watch: How It’s Made: Honey. My dear reader Jenny keeps bees, so I would love to know how accurate it is, Jenny!

We worked on our journals, and Rose is reading some books from the Honey Bee Week booklist in Exploring Nature With Children .

Do you have a museum or field trip planned for this week?

Butterfly Week~Exploring Nature With Children

b1

This week is Butterfly Week in Exploring Nature With Children, and our butterflies arrived right on cue!

b2

Such beautiful creatures, we have really enjoyed raising them.

b3

We still have one with us; it has a damaged wing and cannot fly, so Rose is taking great care of it, making sure it has food and regular walks around the garden.

b5

I am very much looking forward to sketching this one, but the butterflies were ousted from my journal this week by a new addition to our animal family! Unfortunately, one of Rosie’s Ballon Molly’s died last week, so we went to the pet shop to get a new Molly, but Rose spied the most handsome Siamese Fighting Fish. So home with us he came.

mf

He is named Heracles, as our reading that morning had been from D’Aulaire’s Greek Myths, the story of the strongest of all mortals, so it was the perfect name for our extremely handsome fish!

How was your nature study this week? Do you have butterflies yet?

Happy exploring!
