Painting Hawthorne Berries In My Nature Journal

This week I sketched some Hawthorne berries, a Sycamore leaf, and the full, Hunters’ Moon. The hedgerows are bursting with Hawthorne berries right now; the landscapes are abundant in such bright, beautiful colours.

We Were All Meant To Be Naturalists

“We were all meant to be naturalists, each in his degree, and it is inexcusable to live in a world so full of the marvels of plant and animal life and to care for none of these things.”

Painting Holly In My Nature Journal

IMG_7972 (1).jpg

This week I sketched some Holly from the tree in the garden. The berries are bright red at the top of the tree, and less ripe further down. I am hoping the birds will leave me a couple of berry-bearing branches for decorating the house at Christmas!
I also painted a strawberry leaf; I love watching the changes in colours on the strawberry leaves as we move through autumn.

Bittersweet

img_7698

On Monday, our evening walk was tinged with sadness. My youngest daughter found a Kingfisher, dead amongst the reeds in the pond. We were all so very, very sad.

Isn’t he such a beauty.

The evening light was perfect; golden rays warming the earth. We all retuned home feeling very subdued. Of course we brought him home to observe and sketch, before we buried him in our garden.

Happy Michaelmas!

michaelmas

I love this time of year; the sense of abundance in nature combines with the cosiness of home. After a long summer of lazy days, we return to our familiar daily routines. Everything begins to turn inward again as we prepare our hearts and homes for the long winter months ahead.

Where I live, the Michaelmas Daisy is everywhere.

The Michaelmas Daisies, among dede weeds,
Bloom for St Michael’s valorous deeds.
And seems the last of flowers that stood,
Till the feast of St. Simon and St. Jude.

On that lovely note, I wish you a happy and healthy Michaelmas, from my home to yours!

Autumnal Equinox Week

IMG_7076.jpg

The weather here was beautiful on the Equinox, so we went out for a leisurely stroll in the woods, despite the girls recovering from a nasty virus, and me coming down with it. (You know, the ear, nose, and throat sort.)

Rose couldn’t resist the water.

Everything is still very green, though some leaves are beginning to turn.
