My Calendar of Firsts for this week:

  • A House Sparrow performing acrobatics at the feeder
  • A pretty brown-lipped snail brought to me by Rose
  • A Kestrel hunting over the meadow
  • My foxgloves are coming along nicely!

What is happening in the natural world where you live?

Happy exploring!

  1. Hi Lynn

My reply is a bit late, I am sorry I just don’t know what has happened to this week. We have been away again up north this time on the hunt for red squirrels! Where we went is supposed to have a good colony which is used to humans so you’d have thought there was a good chance of seeing one, sadly this was not to be 🙁 . They were in the middle of an outbreak of squirrel pox which has prevented them putting out feeders and has decimated the population.

Just walking round the site was very interesting however and made me realise just how much wildlife is around where we live. I did see a willow warbler which is new to my list but no new butterflies as it was so wet.

Have your sparrows got babies “our” group seem to have several all very fluffy and cute but we have had to reduce feeding as the rooks are such a problem the little birds get none anyway, any suggestions? I like how you have done your feeder, you haven’t wasted time drawing every seed but it still looks like it is full of seed and allows the sparrow to take centre stage.

    Best wishes

    Jenny

    1. What a shame about the red squirrels 🙁 I hope your children weren’t too disappointed (I would have been!)

      We do have sparrow babies!

Regarding the Rooks, I have heard people have good results with ‘squirrel-proof feeders’. Have you tried that idea?

      Lx
