Exploring Nature With Children: A Guided Journal

Exploring Nature With Children is a complete, year-long curriculum designed to guide you, step by step, through an entire calendar year of nature study. Completely self-contained, this book has all the information you need to make nature study happen regularly for your family.

Exploring Nature With Children contains:

  • An entire chapter devoted to getting you up and running with nature study.
  • Forty-eight weeks of themed and guided nature study; four weeks for each month of the year, organised by season. Exploring Nature With Children can be used as a whole year’s study, or dipped in and out of as you please.

Each week’s guided study contains the following:

  • A themed nature walk.

Exploring Nature With Children will take you step by step through a themed, Charlotte Mason-style, nature walk. There is no need to hunt through various books and websites; all the information you need is there, leaving you free to enjoy being out in nature with your child.

  • References to the Handbook Of Nature Study.

Exploring Nature With Children is completely self-contained, but includes references to related pages in the Handbook Of Nature Study by Anna Botsford Comstock, should you wish to delve a little deeper.

  • A themed book list.

With books for children of all ages, you will find a comprehensive list of living books related to the week’s nature study theme. Exploring Nature With Children is a self-contained course, so the book list is an extra tool, not a necessity.

You will also receive the booklist compiled separately, should you wish to use it as an additional planning tool.

  • A poem

Related to the nature theme of the week; a classic piece of poetry that can be used for copywork, dictation, or simply to just read aloud and enjoy.

  • A piece of art

The name and details of a piece of art that relates to the nature theme of the week has been included. This can easily be looked up online, or in art books available from your local library.

  • Extension activities for your child

Here you will find a list of activities, written directly to your child, that will extend their nature study throughout the whole of the week. You will find ideas for crafts, writing, science, maths, and more, with absolutely no busy work.

  8. Hi 🙂
I was wondering before i purchase if there is a version already adapted to the southern hemisphere or if It’s something i would just need to do as i went along?

    Thank you in advance
    Melissa

    1. Dear Melissa,

Thank you for writing. Exploring Nature With Children is written to be as accessible as possible to all families, however, it has a definite northern hemisphere, four season slant, and I do not have a version adapted to the Southern Hemisphere I’m afraid. Other families will need to adapt the book slightly to fit with either their climate or location. There are thousands of families who happily use ENWC around the world, but they do have to adjust to suit what is happening in the natural world around them. The best thing to do is to pop over to the website & download the sample. Here you can see a complete week’s lessons and the table of contents, which shows the theme for each week. This should help you decide if ENWC will be suitable for your own family. If you have any questions, do let me know!

      Warmly, Lynn

  10. Hi, Is there a specific sight you recommend getting the pictures of paintings from? Thanks.

    1. Dear Ruth,

Thank you for taking the time to write.

I haven’t found one single website that hosts all of the art works, however, they should all easily be found with an internet. (I often use them as our desktop screensaver for the week.)

Do let me know if there’s anything else I can help with.

      Warmly,
      Lynn

    1. Hello there!

Yes, of course. Please could you let me know the original email address that you used to purchase, I was not able to find your purchase with this email address. I can then reset your original purchase so that a new email is sent to you containing your download link.

The fastest way to reach me is to email me via lynn@raisinglittleshoots.com

  11. I purchased this several years ago and only printed partial pages. After a move, I am no longer able to find it and I can no longer access it on my email. I there a way to have the pdf recent to my email? Thanks!
    Brook

  12. Dear Lynn, I purchased your curriculum and have been using it off and on the last several months with a couple of my friends. One issue we are finding is that the “subjects” listed for certain weeks are not coinciding with our nature cycle. My friends and I are very “A” type personalities and are finding it difficult to follow the teachers guide. For instance, in March week 1 was nesting birds. We didn’t even see any birds out at that time. Not until the first of April, really. We are located in the Midwest. Literally smack dab in the middle of the US. We were wondering if you wrote this being in a different park of the US and on a different cycle. Again, type “A” personalities are giving us issues trying to use this program. Any thoughts? Thanks for a great nature study though.

    1. Dear Stacy,
I’m sorry to hear that you’re struggling! And thank you for your kind words.
I’m in the UK, however, ENWC is written to be as accessible as possible to all families, however, it has a definite northern hemisphere, four season slant.
I always advise that families follow what is happening in the natural world about them rather than trying to follow exactly the layout of ENWC. The best thing to do perhaps would be to look at the table of contents (& ignore the months/weeks) & look at what topic would be suitable for you in your locality. Next week is Grasses, so you should be fine with that topic, but say Wildflowers Week (this week) could be saved for a couple of weeks.
I hope this helps a little, but you may also find the Facebook group a helpful place with likeminded families:

Any questions, do feel free to ask!

  14. Hi Lynn,
I was wondering if there is another way to purchase this? I have tried 4 separate times and have received calls from my bank thinking it’s a fraudulent purchase. We are new to the Charlotte Mason method and think your book would be perfect to get us started. Perhaps a paypal transaction?

    1. Dear Tammy,

Thank you for taking the time to write; I appreciate how frustrating this must be.
The most likely issue is that your bank is declining the payment because your account does not allow overseas transactions. (I am in England.) If you contact your bank directly and authorise the payment, you should be fine to check out.

If you prefer, I would be delighted to send a PayPal invoice; please could you read and agree to the following so that I can serve you well:

·Please reply to this email to confirm once you have made the payment. I am processing your purchase manually and may miss the PayPal notification alone. Without a confirmation from the original email it’s very difficult to track who I need to send download links to, especially if the PayPal email address varies from the contact email.
·The download link will come via Payhip, the company that hosts my book online.
·Please be aware that there will be a waiting time between making your payment & receipt of the download link as the link shall be sent manually.

If you’re happy to go ahead, please email me directly, letting me know your PayPal-linked email address & the exact title of the book(s) you wish to purchase:

      lynn@raisinglittleshoots.com

Do let me know if you have any questions. Thank you for your patience and understanding!

      Warmly,
      Lynn

      1. Hi Lynn,
Thank you so much for getting back with me. I have contacted my bank and they can’t authorize the transaction over the phone so I’d have to go to the bank. At this point I’m wondering if a PayPal transaction would work since it’s tied to my bank account. I’ll see what I can get done and hopefully get this to go through. Thanks again so much for your help!

        1. You’re most welcome Tammy. I’m more than happy to send a PayPal invoice if that’s more convenient for you.

  15. I ordered the guided journal as well as the activity PDF. I was about to download the activities which were 238 pages but the journal I can’t locate? I checked email to see if there was a trail there and nothing. I am sure it’s somewhere but I don’t know where it has gone?

    1. Dear Nancy,
