A Gentle Pause: A Week for Your Own Nature Study Education

Next week is a break week in Exploring Nature with Children; a time to rest, refresh, and restore our own wonder.

This week, I invite you to use this pause for your own nature study as your child’s teacher. Charlotte Mason reminds us that “Education is the Science of Relations.” It’s as true for us as it is for our children.

Here’s a simple way to nourish your own relationship with nature this week:

A Teacher’s Nature Walk

  • Head out of doors alone, even just for ten minutes, and choose one small object of interest; a leaf, a berry, a bird call, a shaft of light through the trees.
  • Observe it quietly. Ponder it. Instead of immediately asking “What is it called?” consider:
    • What idea does it stir in you?
    • Does it remind you of a poem, a line of Scripture, a story, or a childhood memory?
    • How does it fit into the season unfolding around you?
  • Jot these reflections into your own nature notebook. A few words, a sketch, or a line from a poem is enough.

This gentle habit helps us keep our own sense of wonder alive, and ensures we are offering living ideas to our children, not dry facts.

A Gentle Reminder…

As we move toward harvest time, remember my resource Celebrating The Seasons With Children: The Harvest Festival. It’s designed to help families celebrate this abundant season with simple activities, poetry & artwork, and reflections that feed both mind and heart.

 Find it here!

May this week bring you quiet beauty and fresh inspiration for the term ahead!
