The longest days are upon us.
In the honeyed light of midsummer, the air is filled with the buzz of bees, the rustle of leaves, the heavy scent of roses and warm grass all around. The flicker of holy fire that stirs our hearts at this golden point in the year, calls us into wonder. Midsummer is so much more than just a day.
It is a threshold. A beautiful pause.
A time when the earth leans toward the sun, and we also can lean toward the light.
In our faith & nature filled lives, grounded in nature’s rhythms and nourished by intentional living, we know the value of pausing to mark the turning points of the year. And Midsummer and St. John’s Tide offer something truly special: not only a celebration of warmth and wildflowers but a spiritual invitation to make straight the path for Christ in our hearts.
That’s why I created the guide:
Celebrating the Seasons with Children: Midsummer and St. John’s Tide
— to help you enter this season simply, meaningfully, and joyfully, with your children beside you.
So, Why St. John’s Tide?
While most people celebrate the solstice on June 21st, Midsummer has long been observed on the 24th, the feast of that wild, desert-dwelling prophet who prepared the way.
“He was a burning and shining light.” (John 5:35)
And how fitting, as the sun stands highest in the sky.
This is a time of bonfires and ripening berries, but also of soul-tending.
