The Dreaming Nights: Learning to Rest in the Dark

There comes a point in the year when the light sinks early, and the world seems to draw in its breath. The trees stand bare, the soil sleeps, and even the stars appear sharper in the sky.

For mothers, especially those who carry so much, who have tended and cared for others all year long, this season can feel both beautiful and utterly exhausting. We are invited to rest, but often we do not know how.

We tidy the house for winter, light the candles, make the tea, yet something deeper calls to us. Something that asks:

“Lay it all down. The work, the proving, the hurry. Let your soul rest awhile in the hands of God.”

The Wisdom of the Dark

In our culture, darkness is often spoken of as something to escape. But the natural world tells us a different story. Seeds must rest in the dark before they sprout. Animals stay close to their burrows. The long nights need not be bleak; indeed, they are a gift.

The early Christians understood this. They lived by the turning of the seasons and saw winter not as emptiness, but as the womb of renewal, a holy darkness in which new life stirs unseen.

If we can learn to walk gently through this season, to listen, to dream, to let go, we are led to discover a different kind of strength. A rootedness that no rush or noise can give.

A Practice of Slow Faith

This is the heart of The Dreaming Nights , a devotional guide that gently leads you from All Souls’ Day to Epiphany, through the heart of winter.

Each entry follows a simple, steady pattern:

  • Ritual : a small, grounding practice of faith, home, or nature
  • Restin Scripture, prayer, and silence.
  • Reflect : a short reading, based upon the day’s Bible verse, to nurture stillness and hope
  • For Your Diary : a meaningful journaling prompt for deeper reflection
  • Prayer : a closing moment to draw heart and home back to God
  • Rekindle the small joys that make home holy

Please do not feel that this is another list of things to do to add to your already overflowing days. Instead, it is a way of being; returning to the rhythm of the earth, the wisdom of Christ, and the quiet voice within.

If your heart seeks more peace this winter, The Dreaming Nights is a companion to guide you gently back to yourself, and to God.

It’s available now with 20% off using the code DREAMING20.
