Exploring Nature With Children: A Guided Journal

Exploring Nature With Children is a complete, year-long curriculum designed to guide you, step by step, through an entire calendar year of nature study. Completely self-contained, this book has all the information you need to make nature study happen regularly for your family.

Exploring Nature With Children contains:

  • An entire chapter devoted to getting you up and running with nature study.
  • Forty-eight weeks of themed and guided nature study; four weeks for each month of the year, organised by season. Exploring Nature With Children can be used as a whole year’s study, or dipped in and out of as you please.

Each week’s guided study contains the following:

  • A themed nature walk.

Exploring Nature With Children will take you step by step through a themed, Charlotte Mason-style, nature walk. There is no need to hunt through various books and websites; all the information you need is there, leaving you free to enjoy being out in nature with your child.

  • References to the Handbook Of Nature Study.

Exploring Nature With Children is completely self-contained, but includes references to related pages in the Handbook Of Nature Study by Anna Botsford Comstock, should you wish to delve a little deeper.

  • A themed book list.

With books for children of all ages, you will find a comprehensive list of living books related to the week’s nature study theme. Exploring Nature With Children is a self-contained course, so the book list is an extra tool, not a necessity.

  • A poem

Related to the nature theme of the week; a classic piece of poetry that can be used for copywork, dictation, or simply to just read aloud and enjoy.

  • A piece of art

The name and details of a piece of art that relates to the nature theme of the week has been included. This can easily be looked up online, or in art books available from your local library.

  • Extension activities for your child

Here you will find a list of activities, written directly to your child, that will extend their nature study throughout the whole of the week. You will find ideas for crafts, writing, science, maths, and more, with absolutely no busy work.

    1. Dear Jessica,

Exploring Nature With Children is as family friendly, and multi-age as possible. It gives you the necessary scientific information for each week’s nature theme, then the parent can present those facts as they see fit, to each individual child. A child that is old enough to keep a nature journal will get the most out of it, but I have included suggestions for using the book with much younger children, too. ENWC is written to equip you as a parent, to talk with your child about nature, without having to go through a pile of different books first! The extension activities included vary; venn diagrams, writing poetry, making models, amongst many others. I have been very careful to use only relevant, authentic activities, with absolutely no busy work. Some will suit younger children, others are for the older child. If you click above to see the sample, it should give you an idea of whether ENWC would be suitable for your own family at this point.

      Warmly,
      Lynn

      1. Hi there, my daughter is 18 months is it a good idea for me to do this program with her once every year to see how much she has changed in her observations and when she is actually able to articulate and journal? Looking forward to your reply

        1. Dear Sara,

I think that’s a smashing idea. You might find that she’s a little young just now; often mums with really little ones use ENWC at this stage as a structure for their own learning. There are samples on the website for you to have a look at.
Do let me know if you have any other questions.

          Warmly,
          Lynn

  1. Hey, I’d really love to purchase a physical copy, will there be any available in the future? Kind regards, Beth

    1. Dear Beth,
I don’t have any plans to release a hard copy any time soon.

Many of my UK customers use Pingles Publishing for printing and binding.

US customers recommend the Homeschool Printing Company.

I hope that this is helpful!

      Warmly,
      Lynn 💕🍄

  2. Hello I recently purchased this & it is saying I have exceeding my download attempts?

Any ideas how I can continue using it?

    Thank you

    1. Dear Elissa,

I would be happy to send a PayPal invoice, but please be aware that everything is done manually this way, so there would be a delay between you sending the funds & receiving the book. If you’d like to go down this route, please let me email me to let me know your PayPal-linked email address & the exact title of the book(s) you wish to purchase.

  3. Hi, I’m interested in purchasing your curriculum, Exploring Nature with Children. Are you offering a current coupon code by any chance ? Thanks! Carrie

    1. Dear Carrie,
I’m afraid not. There is currently a 20% code available for Exploring Nature Around the Year: 365 Days of Nature Journaling, (MOON18) but not Exploring Nature With Children.
      Warmly,
      Lynn

  4. Can you elaborate on the “12 days of Christmas” unit? Would a family whom does not celebrate Christmas still enjoy the lesson? Thanks in advance.

    1. Dear Caroline,
“Would a family whom does not celebrate Christmas still enjoy the lesson?”
It depends! (Not a great answer, I realise!) Most of the activities are nature based, but not all. The poem is by Christina Rossetti, and religious in its nature. The recommended books and art work are focused on Christmas. I would say that if you have any doubt at all, it would not be for you. I would not want to mislead you in any way!
Please do let me know if you have any further questions.
      Warmly,
      Lynn

  5. I would like to purchase EXPLORING NATURE WITH CHILDREN for a family. I need the e-book to go to them and the reciept to come to me….is that possible?

    1. Dear Rebecca,

Thank you for getting in touch! The website will automatically do the conversion for you. If you prefer, I can sen you a PayPal invoice, but please be aware, that everything is one manually, so there’s a delay between you making payment & receiving your download link.

You can contact me directly at: lynn@raisinglittleshoots.com

      Warmly,
      Lynn

    1. Dear Jacquelyn,

I am terribly sorry that you are having this problem.
The most likely reason is that your bank is declining the payment because your account does not allow overseas transactions. (I am in England.) If you contact your bank and authorise the payment, you should be fine to check out.

      Warmly,
      Lynn

  6. Hi! I found you through IG. Would most of the nature studies be do-able/profitable in Florida? Or is the book strongly oriented towards northern seasons?

    1. Hello there!
Exploring Nature With Children is written to be as accessible as possible to all families, however, it has a definite northern hemisphere, four season slant. Other families will need to adapt the book slightly to fit with either their climate or location. I do have many Floridian readers, but they do have to adjust to suit what is happening in the natural world around them. Take a look at the preview. Here you can see a complete week’s lessons and the table of contents, which shows the theme for each week. This should help you decide if this curriculum will work for your family.

      https://raisinglittleshoots.com/buy-exploring-nature-with-children/

Exploring Nature Around The Year is written to be used within a northern hemisphere, four season climate, I think that this book may be more difficult to make work in your climate.

Do let me know if you have any other questions.

      Warmly,
      Lynn

  7. Greetings! I am so excited to have just purchased Explore Nature with Children and a download of the guided journal as well. I wasn’t able to purchase multiple copies of the guided journal even though I do need more than one. I’ll be using it with our 6 yr old and 4 yr old. I also have a 3 yr old, but I’m guessing it’s too old for her? In order to get my 4 yr old a copy, do I need to purchase another download? I’m happy to do this, just wasn’t sure if that was the expectation or not. Thank you for your help!

    1. Dear Norie,
Thank you for taking the time to get in touch. You are more than welcome to use the Guided Journal download with all of your children; no need to buy one for each child.
Thank you for choosing my books, I’m honoured that ENWC is a part of your home education.
      Happy exploring!
      Lynn 💕🌱

  8. Hi! I purchased this curriculum about 2 years ago and was following it But lost the down load and can not find my email with the download. Is their any way to recover it from email or otherwise?

    1. Dear Sarah,

The book is B&W, excepting the cover.

Do let me know if there’s anything else I can help with.

Thank you for choosing my books, I’m honoured to be a part of your home education!

      Warmly,
      Lynn
