Exploring Nature With Children: A Guided Journal

Exploring Nature With Children is a complete, year-long curriculum designed to guide you, step by step, through an entire calendar year of nature study. Completely self-contained, this book has all the information you need to make nature study happen regularly for your family.

Exploring Nature With Children contains:

  • An entire chapter devoted to getting you up and running with nature study.
  • Forty-eight weeks of themed and guided nature study; four weeks for each month of the year, organised by season. Exploring Nature With Children can be used as a whole year’s study, or dipped in and out of as you please.

Each week’s guided study contains the following:

  • A themed nature walk.

Exploring Nature With Children will take you step by step through a themed, Charlotte Mason-style, nature walk. There is no need to hunt through various books and websites; all the information you need is there, leaving you free to enjoy being out in nature with your child.

  • References to the Handbook Of Nature Study.

Exploring Nature With Children is completely self-contained, but includes references to related pages in the Handbook Of Nature Study by Anna Botsford Comstock, should you wish to delve a little deeper.

  • A themed book list.

With books for children of all ages, you will find a comprehensive list of living books related to the week’s nature study theme. Exploring Nature With Children is a self-contained course, so the book list is an extra tool, not a necessity.

You will also receive the booklist compiled separately, should you wish to use it as an additional planning tool.

  • A poem

Related to the nature theme of the week; a classic piece of poetry that can be used for copywork, dictation, or simply to just read aloud and enjoy.

  • A piece of art

The name and details of a piece of art that relates to the nature theme of the week has been included. This can easily be looked up online, or in art books available from your local library.

  • Extension activities for your child

Here you will find a list of activities, written directly to your child, that will extend their nature study throughout the whole of the week. You will find ideas for crafts, writing, science, maths, and more, with absolutely no busy work.

  1. Hello, Angie!

I am terribly sorry that you are having this issue.
I have just had a look at the failed payment. It appears that your payment was declined by your bank. I only am shown a generic reason (I have emailed you with the screenshot.) But the most likely issue is that the sale is overseas (I am in England.) If you contact your bank and authorise the payment, you should be fine to check out. Alternatively, I can send you a PayPal invoice if you prefer.
Again, huge apologies, do let me know if you have any further questions.

    Warmly,
    Lynn

  2. I called my bank and got the issue resolved so I could use my card Thank you for your prompt response. I am looking forward to using this book! My sister-in-law bought a copy and recommended it.

    1. Heather, it comes from Payhip, the company that host my books online. I have tried to re-set your purchase to re-send, but I cannot find anything from the email address you have linked with WordPress. It’s best if we communicate via email, so I’ve just emailed you.

    1. Exploring Nature With Children is only available as a PDF download.

Many of my UK customers have recommended http://www.pinglespublishing.co.uk for printing and binding.
US customers recommend the Homeschool Printing Company.

      I hope that is helpful!
      Warmly,
      Lynn

        1. Dear Alexis,

  5. Would it be possible for me to see a month only? I’m not sure if this is what I’m looking for, so before purchasing the whole book I’d love to see at least a portion of it?

    1. Dear Teresa,
There’s a link to the sample on this page. It’s a week, not a month, but I think that it would give you a feel for the book .
Do let me know if you have any further questions.
      Yours sincerely,
      Lynn

    1. Hello there!
The book is priced in USD. The website will do the conversion for you.
      Happy exploring!
      Lynn

  6. Does the curriculum come with printed artwork? The sample just mentions a painting and artist for the week.

    1. Dear Sarah,

You will need to source the paintings separately. I look ours up online & set it as our desktop for the week.

      Warmly,
      Lynn

  8. Hi there, I bought your book and the charge posted to my credit card on July 27th. I checked my email and don’t have anything from Payhip or containing a download for your book. Thanks so much! Jennifer

    1. Dear Jennifer,

I am terribly sorry that you have not received your download link, the system is automated, so you should have received an email as soon as you checked out. I shall re-set your purchase now, so that another email is sent to you straight away. It will come from Payhip, the company that host my book online.

Please could you email me if you don’t receive it; it’s difficult to track issues and give good customer service in the comments.

      Warmly,
      Lynn

  9. Hi Lynn,
I was wondering if the Phenology Wheel or Guided Journal were included in the Nature With Children Complete…? If not, would one be a better companion to the complete curriculum than the other? And lastly, is the Phenology Wheel and Guided Journal redundant to each other? They are both types of journaling right? Thanks so much for answering my questions! And please advise regarding my order (comment above).

    -Jennifer

    1. Dear Jennifer,

The Phenology Wheel Guide and Guided Journals are completely separate products to Exploring Nature With Children.

Exploring Nature With Children is essentially the teacher’s manual, the Guided Journals (there are two: one with print-style copywork, the other has cursive style copywork.) are the student books. You can use ENWC without the GJ, but not the other way about.

The Phenology Wheel Guide teaches you how to set up a Phenology Wheel to observe nature month by month.

There are samples of all the products on the website, which should help you to decide what will work for your own family.

      Warmly,
      Lynn

  10. How old is this for? Would a 2 year old be too young? I want to start nature walks and such to get in a good routine. Suggestions? TIA 🙂

    1. Dear Jesica,

ENWC would help you as the parent to get into the routine of taking nature walks with your daughter, I would most likely wait a little before using the activities, poetry etc. If you take a look at the sample, you should be able to decide if ENWC will be a good fit for you.
Do let me know if you have any further questions!

      Warmly,
      Lynn

  11. Shoot! I think I’ve missed the sale?! Have I?
Also, upon reviewing the sample pages I’m interested in knowing what your opinion is if she levels? We are 9&11y with an 18m baby. Is this appropriate for our ages?
    Thank you!

    1. Dear Sam,

Yes, I’m sorry the sale ended on Sunday.
Exploring Nature With Children is as family friendly, and multi-age as possible. It gives you the necessary scientific information for each week’s nature theme, then the parent can present those facts as they see fit, to each individual child. A child that is old enough to keep a nature journal will get the most out of it, but I have included suggestions for using the book with much younger children, too. ENWC is written to equip you as a parent, to talk with your child about nature, without having to go through a pile of different books first!
The extension activities included vary; venn diagrams, writing poetry, making models, amongst many others. I have been very careful to use only relevant, authentic activities, with absolutely no busy work. Some will suit younger children, others are for the older child.

I hope this helps, do let me know if you have any further questions.

      Warmly,
      Lynn

    1. Thank you so much! I’m honoured that ENWC is a part of your home education.
      Happy exploring!
      Lynn

  12. Long story shirt, I used all of the “download attempts” for my Phenology wheel while at Staples trying to get it printed. They were having wifi troubles and I was having phone troubles simultaneously. Is there any chance I could get sent another email with 1 mored download so I can get it printed?
    Thank you

    1. Hi Natalie, we just started the curriculum the first week of September (we’re on week 3) and my kids love it already! You can totally do it with your two and four year old. I have a 7, 3 and 18 month old and my 3 year old is enjoying it just as much as my 7 year old. Flesh out the lesson with age appropriate picture books (she suggests many on the topic of the week!), etc. Or just enjoy the lesson as is. It’s up to the mom on how deep she wants to go. It’s probably the best curriculum purchase I made this year and we’ll use it for many years to come because it is so expansive. Enjoy!

      1. Thank you for your lovely feedback, Jennifer! It’s wonderful to hear that all your children are enjoying ENWC.

        Warmly,
        lynn

    2. Dear Natalie,

  13. Hello, just a couple of issues with your site. I can’t find an email address. Also when you say curriculum it isn’t clear whether this means you are covering the core subjects (reading, writing, arithmetic) through study of nature or not. Please could you update the site to make clear and provide an email address. Many thanks. I am sure people would find this helpful. (I have just noticed other comments along the same lines). Please could you update the site to make it more obvious?

    1. Hello there,

Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback; I shall take that on board.
My email address is on the main (home) page of the website, should anyone wish to contact me privately. I do answer all comments.
      lynn@raisinglittleshoots
I use the word ‘curriculum’ in it’s literal sense, to mean ‘course of study’. ENWC does include mathematics & writing, but would not be considered a full writing & mathematics course, as well as a nature course. I think that the sample would give a good illustration of what ENWC is, and also what it isn’t.

      I hope that is helpful.

      Warmly,
      Lynn
