Exploring Nature With Children: A Guided Journal

Exploring Nature With Children is a complete, year-long curriculum designed to guide you, step by step, through an entire calendar year of nature study. Completely self-contained, this book has all the information you need to make nature study happen regularly for your family.

Exploring Nature With Children contains:

  • An entire chapter devoted to getting you up and running with nature study.
  • Forty-eight weeks of themed and guided nature study; four weeks for each month of the year, organised by season. Exploring Nature With Children can be used as a whole year’s study, or dipped in and out of as you please.

Each week’s guided study contains the following:

  • A themed nature walk.

Exploring Nature With Children will take you step by step through a themed, Charlotte Mason-style, nature walk. There is no need to hunt through various books and websites; all the information you need is there, leaving you free to enjoy being out in nature with your child.

  • References to the Handbook Of Nature Study.

Exploring Nature With Children is completely self-contained, but includes references to related pages in the Handbook Of Nature Study by Anna Botsford Comstock, should you wish to delve a little deeper.

  • A themed book list.

With books for children of all ages, you will find a comprehensive list of living books related to the week’s nature study theme. Exploring Nature With Children is a self-contained course, so the book list is an extra tool, not a necessity.

You will also receive the booklist compiled separately, should you wish to use it as an additional planning tool.

  • A poem

Related to the nature theme of the week; a classic piece of poetry that can be used for copywork, dictation, or simply to just read aloud and enjoy.

  • A piece of art

The name and details of a piece of art that relates to the nature theme of the week has been included. This can easily be looked up online, or in art books available from your local library.

  • Extension activities for your child

Here you will find a list of activities, written directly to your child, that will extend their nature study throughout the whole of the week. You will find ideas for crafts, writing, science, maths, and more, with absolutely no busy work.

  1. Hi! I’m trying to order the curriculum and journal, however your site keeps declining my cards. Is there something wrong with the site at this time?

    1. Dear Trisha,

I am terribly sorry that you are having this problem.
The most likely issue is that your bank is declining the payment because the sale is overseas (I am in England.) If you contact your bank and authorise the payment, you should be fine to check out.

Thank you for choosing my books, I’m honoured to be a part of your home education!

      Warmly,
      Lynn

      1. Hi Trisha,

I’ve recently had to replace my computer and I’ve lost all my files, I ordered the curriculum 6th August 2018 I’ve tried to download it again from the original email but the link has expired. Any chance you could resend the link to me please?

        Nicky

        1. Dear Nicky,

the links don’t expire, but they do have a 5 download limit. I have reset your link, so that you’ll be fine to download again. Please do let me know if you have any other questions.

          Warmly,
          Lynn

  2. I placed my order on my mobile device. It went through, but I never received the email with my download. Please advise!

    1. Dear Rochelle,

      Thank you for your message.

I am terribly sorry that you have not received your download link; the system is automated, so you should have received an email as soon as you checked out. It has possibly gone into your spam folder, or if you’re a gmail user, your promotions folder.
I shall re-set your purchase now, so that another email is sent to you straight away. It will come from Payhip, the company that host my book online.

Please could you let me know once you have received it?

      Kind regards
      Lynn

      1. I live in Central America. Do you think this curriculum will be useful here even though we have different flora and fauna?

        1. Dear Yuli,

The book isn’t so much about specific flora and fauna, it’s guiding you to learn about your own. Exploring Nature With Children is written to be as accessible as possible to all families, however, it has a definite northern hemisphere, four season slant. Other families will need to adapt the book slightly to fit with either their climate or location. If you take a look at the preview, you can see a complete week’s lessons and the table of contents, which shows the theme for each week. This should help you decide if this curriculum will work for your family.

Do let me know if you have any questions!

          Warmly,
          Lynn

  3. Hi Lynn,

Which version of: Handbook Of Nature Study by Anna Botsford Comstock does the guides reference?

    Thanks!

    1. Dear Anastasia,
Hmm, that’s a strange one! My books are PDFs, so completely unalterable, so I’m not sure how it’s possible to only get two pages…I wonder if your download was interrupted? (Poor internet connection or some such problem.)
I’ll send you an email now so that we can continue our conversation more easily.
      Warmly,
      Lynn

  4. Hi there,
Wondering if there is a lot of Christianity interwoven into this curriculum or if it would be easy enough to omit certain things for a non-Christian family to use.

    Thanks,
    Mia

    1. Dear Mia,

The following weeks of Exploring Nature With Childrencontain Christian themes:

Christmas plants: Discusses ‘traditional’ Christmas plants (Poinsettia etc) Contains ‘The Holly & The Ivy’ – Traditional, as the week’s poem. One of the activities is to make Christmas tree decorations.

The Twelve Days of Christmas: The introduction explains that this is the Christian season that celebrates the birth of Jesus, and The poem for this week is: In the bleak midwinter by Christina Rossetti

Candlemas: The introduction explains that Candlemas marks the presentation of the Holy Child in the Temple, where Simeon held Jesus and called him a ‘Light to the World’, and that in pre-Christian times it was an important festival to celebrate the returning light.

July: Weather discusses the legend of St. Swinthun and one of the activities that week is to track the weather to see if the legend is correct.

Black Garden Ants: Contains Proverbs 6:6-8 as the week’s poem.

The Solstice and equinox weeks discuss the changes that are happening in the natural world.

The science within the book contains no controversial topics.

Some of the poetry contains religious themes.

My curricula are used by secular families, and families of different faith backgrounds. I understand that this is a very important matter to us parents, so please do not hesitate to get in touch if you have any further questions!

      Warmly,
      Lynn

    1. Dear Dale,

I have re-set the download limit for you (it’s automatically set to allow 5 attempts), so you’ll be fine to download again.
Do let me know if there’s anything else I can help with.

      Sincerely,
      Lynn

  5. I am really impressed with this nature study. I was wondering if you have a schedule for those of us living in the US. We are lost as to where to start because it is April and we don’t have leaves on the trees yet.

  6. I was considering to purchase this curriculum but unfortunately this website does not provide a Paypal option.

  7. Hi! I ordered the Exploring Nature with children and the Phenology Wheel guide (total of $26) Ordered on April 3, and my card was charged on April 4, 2019. I thought you sent me an email confirmation with the PDF’s attached but I cannot find it anywhere. Please feel free to email me with any help. I live in Africa and our company pays for my homeschooling materials so I will also need an invoice/receipt as well. Sorry for the trouble! -Sharon

  10. HI! Can you tell me the difference between the Exploring Nature with Children download and the one with the guided journal, are they two separate books? Do I need both? Thanks for your help!

    1. Dear Danielle,

Exploring Nature With Children is essentially the teacher manual, the Guided Journals are the student pages. You need ENWC to use the Guided Journals, but you can use ENWC alone.
If you take a look at the samples, it should make it clearer.

Do let me know if you have any further questions!
      Warmly,
      Lynn

  11. Lynn,
I am a member of A Gentle Feast Community but haven’t been on Facebook for a week or so and I see that I missed a coupon code that expired yesterday! Would you be willing to extend it for me by a day? I’m very excited to try your curriculum as I live on 6 wooded acres, have a big garden, and my kids love being outside!
    Dana

  12. Hi, I’m really interested in using this curriculum with my children! I’m not much of a nature person, but would like to teach my children to be, so this seems like it would be perfect. Do you have any advice for using this in Florida USA? Our autumn and winter seasons are so different here; I reach a mental roadblock when thinking about teaching my children about them. The leaves don’t change or fall off the trees (except for a very few cultivated/non-native species), we get no snow, nothing freezes, etc. The only difference seems to be that our St. Augustine grass (considered a weed everywhere else in the world) goes dormant for a few months. I would really appreciate any advice you might have. Thanks!

    1. Dear Christi,

Thank you for taking the time to write to me.

Exploring Nature With Children is written to be as accessible as possible to all families, however, it has a definite northern hemisphere, four season slant. Other families will need to adapt the book slightly to fit with either their climate or location. I have thousands of families who happily use ENWC around the world, but they do have to adjust to suit what is happening in the natural world around them. Take a look at the preview. Here you can see a complete week’s lessons and the table of contents, which shows the theme for each week. This should help you decide if this curriculum will work for your family. You might also like to ask for direct feedback from Floridians in my Facebook group:

  13. Hi, I bought the Curriculum today but don’t seem to have received a download link to my email. Can you please resend?

    1. Thank you for your message.

      Dear Alisa,

I am terribly sorry that you have not received your download link; the system is automated, so you should have received an email as soon as you checked out; it has possibly gone into your spam folder.

      1. Thanks Lynn,

Unfortunately the link has not come through, I have checked all folders.

        1. Alisa,
I actually emailed tech support about this last night. Essentially, the email that you have used to contact me via the website, and the email that you have used to purchase the book both look identical, however, one begins with a capital i and the other start with lower case L, if that makes sense: the both appear as: I l !!!

Tech support & I have both resent your link, but I sent it to the one you have used to purchase with (which I didn’t know at the time you had entered incorrectly, so it will have gone again to the incorrect email address. This is quite confusing, please could I ask if you could email me directly lynn@raisinglittleshoots.com

I can then use that email address to set up a new ‘account’ for your purchase. As I mentioned, the email addresses appear the same, but actually are not.

Once I have the correct email address, I can get your link to you.

          Warmly,
          Lynn
