February Nature Note

I hope that this February Nature Note finds you well!

Many of you purchased during the Winter Sale, and are just starting out with Exploring Nature with Children, and are joining us for the first time this month. Please jump right in, you can begin ENWC at any point in the year, and there’s no better time to get started than the present!

If you began back in 2019, my hope is that you and your child are enjoying your studies, and learning about the natural world around you.

A quote to carry with you this February:

To nourish our child with ideas is key to a Charlotte Mason inspired education:

“Give your child a single valuable idea, and you have done more for his education than if you had laid upon his mind the burden of bushels of information”

Vol. 1, p. 174

We want our child to feast and grow on ideas, have them really chew on those ideas, be challenged and shaped. Nature study is a wonderful ground for observing, thinking, discussing, and sharing.

What ideas will you share with your child this month? (Or indeed, will your child share with you!)

For those of you who are using Exploring Nature With Children, the weeks fall as follows:

3rd ~ 9th Week 1: Candlemas Week (Please bear in mind Candlemas falls on the 2nd)

10th ~ 16th Week 2: Earth Worm Week

17th ~ 2623rd Week 3 Evergreen Week

24th ~ 1st Week 4: Field Trip Week

There’s a free calendar for the year to download here.

As always, please work the weeks to suit your own circumstances best; these are just my own suggestions!

If you’re over on Instagram, do pop over and say hello! The Instagram page is very much about community; think of it as your virtual home school co op! Our community uses the #exploringnaturewithchildren hashtag, & also specific weekly hashtags to enable you to connect with other families working through ENWC this year

Seasonal notes:

February can be a challenging month for many. We’re still in the depths of winter, and spring time can feel so far away. (For those in the frozen climes, I hear you when you say that it is!)

We have some special days to enjoy this February to get us through the month with joy:

  • 2nd Candlemas
  • 14th Saint Valentine’s Day
  • 25th Shrove Tuesday
  • 26th Ash Wednesday
  • 29th Leap Day

Here’s a couple of sweet craft activities that you might enjoy on a cold February day:
