This week is moth week in Exploring Nature With Children. We found a lovely Cinnabar caterpillar out on a walk this week. I am sorry I have no photos, but I found an interesting video about the Cinnabar on YouTube.

In our nature journals this week, Rose chose to sketch a Kingfisher, as she has been fascinated with them since we had the blessing to see one fishing at our local pond.
I chose Blackberries. I love blackberries both to sketch & eat! We pick them in the lane behind our house every summer. This year, however, someone has been and hacked them all down, which we are very sad about. I found this branch in the woods. There is hope for our Michaelmas jam tarts after all!

The less hardy flowers in the back bed are suffering from heat. The sunflowers fell over. The echinacea is wilting and drooping. The volunteer tomato has a chain of small tomatoes. The sedum is still budding. The knockout roses continue to bloom.

I am sorry I have not commented for what seems like ages, we have been mad busy but all in a pleasant way. We have currently got four chrysalis of peacock butterfly due to emerge next week, we are feeling fully justified in collecting them as the field they were in has been cut. We have also survived a very muddy camp where we learnt all sorts of bushcraft skills, the children both had a go with an axe =-O I enjoyed cooking on the campfire. We are doing our moth week this coming week and will be joining in the big butterfly count.
I am loving the art work, so many beautiful colours and how wonderful to see a kingfisher, have you got that in gold on your bird list? Hope all is well with you and you are basking in the beautiful sun we are currently enjoying, I am enjoying the evenings with what seems like a whole skyful of swifts, swallows and house martins.
I wonder if you could help me please? I have just been given an alpaca fleece as it has come off the animal, I was scandalised when the owner said he couldn’t give it away, he was going to compost it! The only problem is I am not sure what to do with it, could you point me to a good book please, I will have to use a drop spindle as I don’t have room for a wheel. I am dreaming of all the beautiful things I can make but I think I may be rushing ahead a little……….;-)

I can see I am on a steep learning curve, practice makes perfect! At least the weather is fine so I can get washing. This is something I have wanted to learn for some time, I hope I can do the fibre justice.
