This week is Summer Solstice Week in Exploring Nature With Children.
We planned a lovely walk for the Solstice. And then it rained. And rained. And rained some more! As the rain lightened a little, Rose rescued two bees that were too tired out to fly.
She popped honey on her hand for them to eat, and soon they were right as rain! (Please excuse the pun!) And away they flew.
The sun finally came out and we enjoyed a glorious late afternoon and evening in the garden.
Rose sketched a raspberry leaf for her journal.
I sketched a Blackberry cutting.

Butterflies, swifts, swallows and martins, that was the over riding theme of our walk today. Although we have escaped the rain so far it has been warm and muggy and strangely still. The stillness seemed to bring the birds down and magnify any sound, every chirp seemed somehow louder. While we picnicked we were able to watch swallows and house martins come down for a drink, we also saw a blue damselfly and many gatekeeper butterflies. This is the same area we were so disappointed with a few weeks ago, so it was heartening to see not all is lost 🙂
On Monday we did venture out in the rain, puddle jumping and a spot of singing there were a surprisingly number of birds who joined our choir :-).
Further to your previous question, I have recently purchased sepia for my palette and I am loving it, I often use it in place of black it’s much richer. I would also like the shadow violet you have plus another lilac or pinky red can’t decide. I did fancy the charts they sell with a dot of each but I think that may end up too tempting 😉 .
Good on Rose for rescuing the bees, most children would be too scared to pick one up. We had a swarm this week and no one apart from us noticed and it was in the front garden! I thought of you both then and I should have recorded it but didn’t think quickly enough. Anyway they are happily moved into their new home, building lots of wax we hope. I like the note about the changeable weather!

No studying here. Drew a salmon-colored potted geranium that survived the winter indoors and migrated out to the deck.bdrawing it reminded me to water it more regularly. It was getting spindly from the heat.
